Did you know that two-thirds of electricity is lost in the generation and transmission process and never reaches homes and businesses?

It's sad, but true. The U.S. electric power system is based on 1950s technology, making it woefully unreliable and inefficient. Its power interruptions and outages cost American businesses at least $150 billion a year, and it's responsible for nearly 40 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile we demand more and more electricity every year.

There's hope for our power system in the form of available, smart technology and distributed, locally owned systems called microgrids. But we need policy and regulatory change to pave the way for innovation.

What can you do? Learn more about electricity and use less of it. Challenge candidates and elected officials to prioritize grid modernization. Study your utility bill and talk about this issue with your friends and family.
