Smart Grid Author to Discuss Strategies for Decentralizing Electricity
Kurt Yeager to address how smaller smart grids offer greatest return on stimulus investment at Reiter’s Books on April 20
WASHINGTON — Kurt Yeager, smart grid proponent and Galvin Electricity Initiative executive director, will be discussing how modernizing, but decentralizing, the electricity grid will maximize taxpayers’ infrastructure investments and protect the grid at a special book signing at Reiter’s bookstore on Monday, April 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Washington, D.C. Co-authored by former Motorola CEO Bob Galvin and writer Jay Stuller, Yeager’s new book Perfect Power: How the Microgrid Revolution Will Unleash Cleaner, Greener and More Abundant Energy, holds that to maximize economic benefit, the smart grid should be built at the community level, one piece at a time.
Smart microgrids, which are decentralized versions of the larger power grid, allow consumers and communities to realize the benefits of grid modernization quickly and cost-effectively. These entrepreneurially developed and implemented smart, local, distributed power networks can be designed to optimally serve a single building, a neighborhood or an entire community with maximum reliability and efficiency. What’s more, smart microgrids protect communities against security threats by allowing them to “island” in the case of a major fault in the larger grid. The Galvin Electricity Initiative, launched by Robert W. Galvin in 2004, has brought together the nation’s leading electricity experts to reconstruct our electric power system into one that is more affordable, reliable and fuel-efficient. The Initiative has created innovative business and technological blueprints for the ultimate smart grid: the Perfect Power System, a smart microgrid that meets the needs of 21st century consumers.
